Press release

December 2008

Maree Music is pleased to announce it's fifth release - Just for Sport (MMC CD55).

In early 2008 some young guitar players in Maree made their first attempts at songwriting.  The songs were recorded over a period of months and the results were greeted with positive reaction from parents and friends.  The idea then developed to use the songs as the basis for producing a CD from the wealth of young musical talent in the area.

The material includes pop, rock and tradtional music and songs and is performed by 39 children aged 9 to 18.   The age range of the music presented is more extensive - from songs that are a couple of months old to folk tunes that are a couple of hundred years old.  From the song “Love Has No Pride” to the traditional tune “The Geese in the Bog” or from “Peigín Leitir Móir” to a more contemporary “Galway Girl” - a diversity of musical styles is represented on this recording.

Popular local band Amoeba also contribute a track to the album.  They perform "The Truth in Your Eyes" which was written by Jamie Harrison and was part of the set they performed in Vicar Street, Dublin in the National Final of The Battle of the Bands in 2006.

The list of musical instruments played on the album includes acoustic guitars, electric guitars, bass guitar, drums, keyboards, whistles, bodhrán, mandolin, bouzouki, concertinas, fiddles, saxophone, Scottish bagpipes and Irish uilleann pipes.

The CD was officially launched by Jimmy Higgins of The Stunning and it is on sale in Grealy Stores, Maree.

The proceeds from the sales of this CD will benefit the provision of additional sports facilities in Maree.
